Gillespie Milestones Through The Years

Overview

Gillespie Concrete began in 1922 on the farm of our great-great grandfather of the current management, brothers Jim and Todd Gillespie. The firm operated out of the original Dudley’s Corner location in Sudlersville for 60 years.

In 1963 concrete block and ready mix operations were seated in Chestertown, Maryland and in 1971 all operations were consolidated in Chestertown when the company invested in a new precast plant.

Continued growth in the precast market ultimately led to the establishment of Gillespie Precast in 2005, operating out of a separate facility in Chestertown, Maryland and servicing clients in the broader mid Atlantic area.

In 2022 at our 100 year Anniversary Gillespie was selected as a key business growth sector for the state of Maryland and was honored to host Governor Larry Hogans in his economic growth tour.

1922

George Edward Gillespie starts making concrete blocks on his farm; teams with his son, Victor Gillespie to form Gillespie & Son, Inc.

1945

Third generation Edward Gillespie, George Edward’s grandson, joins the company

1950

Gillespie & Son enters the ready-mix concrete market

1963

Chestertown facility purchased from Kent Concrete

1971

All operations consolidated at Chestertown, MD plant on Dixon Drive site (Plant 1); plant operations in Sudlersville, MD cease

1981

Builder’s Supply Store started and fourth-generation Jim Gillespie (Gillespie & Son CEO) joins the company

1993

Fourth-generation Todd Gillespie (Gillespie & Son President) joins the company

2004

Gillespie Precast LLC established and a new precast plant (Plant 2) at the Brickyard site in Chestertown and the Titan Precast Management System is implemented into operation

2005

Gillespie plants/facilities receive NPCA Certification

2007

Gillespie & Son is awarded to the Kent County Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year Award

2008

Delmarva Castings & Supply (DCS) and partnership with the Neenah Foundry established

2013

Gillespie Precast acquired National Concrete Products (NCP) in Greenwood, DE (Plant 3) and fifth-generation Gillespie, Andrew, joins the team

2015

Gillespie Precast awarded the 2015 Pinnacle Award for the Pocket Pull tool

2016

Gillespie companies achieve record sales

2017

Fifth-generation Gillespie, Patrick, joins the team

2022

Gillespie hits the 100 Year Milestone

2025

Broke ground for a new precast concrete manufacturing facility in North Carolina.
