BWI Expansion

Gillespie Precast has supported numerous contractors through the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for projects at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI Airport). Gillespie Precast has contributed to two of the eleven major upgrades to the airport and supplied custom and stock slabs, endwalls, manholes, box culverts and utility vaults.

Key Project Attributes

Project 12-01 Upgrade

Design and construction of a 70,000 square foot addition to Concourse E and renovation of 20,000 square feet of Concourse E. Upper level additions were four arrivals-only gates and two arrivals and departures gates with holdrooms. On the sterile level, the existing sterile corridor was extended with support space for Automated Passport Control. Lower level additions implemented to accommodate future baggage make-up, new electrical substation, mechanical and electrical spaces, two restrooms, and leasable space.

Project 12-03 Upgrade

Construction of 35,000 square yards of new aircraft apron pavement including expansion of the stormwater drainage system with dual oil/water separators and an extended water line to support the Concourse E extension. An existing drainage pond (Pond B14) at the end of Concourse E was converted to aircraft apron. An existing infield area at the end of Cargo Building E was converted into aircraft apron. An outfall pipe was constructed from Pond B14 to Pond B15.

The final result showcases how construction with precast concrete can achieve continuous insulation and thermal efficiency while delivering a traditional aesthetic.
