Catch Basins
The Role of Catch Basins in Water Management
Catch basins play a crucial role in stormwater drainage systems, preventing flooding, erosion, and water buildup on roads, parking lots, and other paved surfaces. These structures collect excess rainwater and melting snow, redirecting it safely into underground drainage systems to minimize surface water hazards.
Also called a drop inlet, these structures consist of a grate and a below-ground compartment. The grate sits flush with the ground surface, allowing water to flow through. Water runs through the grate and into the compartment below. The structure may include a sump to handle sediment and debris; an outlet pipe drains the water.
Without properly placed catch basins, stormwater can pool in low-lying areas, leading to road damage, slippery surfaces, and property flooding. These are also sometimes called storm drains because they prevent flooding from rain and melting snow.
